Whop Digest Week of Feb 7–13
Rams fans, congrats on the win! Everyone else, our deepest condolences. Let’s dive in…
Spirit & Frontier Merger
In a deal valued at $6.6 billion, the two budget airlines will be merging into one entity. Once complete, the new company will be the fifth largest airline in the United States. Spanning the East and West Coast, the new entity will unlock a network of low-cost routes, becoming a formidable competitor to Delta, American, and United. The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2022.
Jordan 1 “Brotherhood”
The retro high model is back in action this February as sneaker releases ramp up. This shoe features a yellow-gold and burgundy color scheme, reminiscent of classic school varsity jackets and lettering. The Jordan will be released on February 26th for $170 retail. While Nike SNKRS is the only confirmed retailer so far, expect various Tier 0 retailers to receive pairs as well.
Decentraland Samsung Event
To launch the newest line of Galaxy smartphones, Samsung hosted a live event in Decentraland. Decentraland is a desktop-based metaverse experience where users can explore a virtual world with an avatar, controlled by keyboard and mouse. To the disappointment of fans, technical difficulties prevented users from joining the virtual event (likely due to extreme server overloads). Hopefully Samsung learned their lesson: plan for crazy traffic.
The previously bankrupt movie subscription service is planning a comeback this summer. When MoviePass cofounder Stacy Spikes purchased the company from Helios and Matheson Analytics, the company was on the brink of disaster: scandalous operational practices, an unsustainable business model, you name it. But in the wreckage, Spike sees an opportunity. Spoiler… it has something to do with Web3 👀.
National EV Charging Network
The Biden administration announced a $5 billion, 5-year plan to build out an electric charging network across the country. The funds will be allocated to individual states to build charging stations along their interstate roads. States must submit their requests to the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation by August 1st, with the first round of funding made available by fiscal year 2022 for those approved. With approximately 41,000 public chargers available today, the increase will hopefully lead to wider EV adoption among American consumers.
A team of MIT researchers developed a new type of plastic, named 2DPA-1. What makes it super? Well, it’s two times stronger than steel, with just one-sixth the material bulk, and it’s capable of conducting electricity and blocking gas. The process to create 2DPA-1 is similar to most common plastics, making its future widespread adoption realistic for many applications.
Fun fact: The longest commercial flight to date is Singapore Airlines’ route from New York JFK to Singapore SIN, with a flight time of around 18 hours and 50 minutes.
